Botanical Arts Style Guide The Natural History Museum
We were thrilled to work with the NHM on this project which perfectly combined our love of print and pattern with our passion and expertise for licensed product.
We were asked to develop a series a botanical prints that utilised the assets available in the NHM archives from some of the world’s most recognised naturalists and natural history artists.
Original assets were manipulated and changed to work within a contemporary setting, and supporting assets were created to facilitate fluidity within patterning. Subtle brand association was identified through adaptation of the Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours, a classic taxonomic guide to colours of the natural world which was originally published in 1814. Product categories included stationery, gifting, bedding, and home décor.

“It is always a pleasure to work with the team at Dot Dash Design. Together we have developed two style guides under the NHM brand, both of which were delivered on time and the quality of work is second to none. Paula, Christa and the rest of the team never fail to understand the brief and immerse themselves fully in each project. Their expertise in illustration and pattern ideation consistently shines through in everything they do and I have no doubt that we will continue to work together in the future.”
